John F. Kennedy Families & Community:
Hello, all! It was fantastic to see so many of you at orientation over the past several days.
A heartfelt thank you to Jan Yoshioka and the dedicated group of parent volunteers who yet again made orientation a resounding success. No small feat, but Jan and her team make it look easy! And, much gratitude to the many families who turned out to support the school and ensure their students a successful start to the new year!

Check Class Schedule!
Please remind your student to check their class schedule (using Infinite Campus) on the evening of August 29. Last minute schedule changes do occur!

Together, these nine educators bring years of experience and expertise. I am excited to be adding them to the Kennedy roster!
In an effort to minimize disruption and allow teachers to begin teaching as soon as possible after the start of the school year, schedule changes should be kept to an absolute minimum.
Too many schedule changes, particularly elective changes, can result in classes that are under or over enrolled, a situation that requires disruptive administrative initiated scheduling moves. Several new processes have been implemented to increase scheduling accuracy and decrease the need for changes.

Many of you have likely noticed the construction on campus in addition to the typical cleaning and repair done each summer. A number of access upgrades have been required as part of the gym renovation/repair project. This work includes a new walkway at the front of the school as well as fresh concrete leading to the gym from the west parking lot. Of course, due to the water damage suffered last winter, the gym floor, doorways, and bleachers will be all new. To prevent future water intrusion concerns, drains have been enlarged and/or rerouted. The estimated completion date for the gym is November 1.
Crews have removed all (ground cover) from the campus in anticipation of future landscaping projects. Shredded cedar will be placed within the next day or two.
As these projects progress, I will keep you posted. Based on what I know and have seen so far, the gym, when complete, will be a beautiful source of great pride for school and community!

Like last year, the emergency card is computer fill-in and may be submitted via the school’s website (directions are located at the bottom of the emergency card). An accurate emergency card is required for every student (every year). Please take time to ensure that the school has up-to-date contact information by completing the emergency card.
At the same time, please ensure your contact information in Infinite Campus (IC) is up to date. Should an urgent need arise, the District now sends text message alerts.
Paper copies of all required documents will be readily available at orientation.
If you submitted a form for the locker lottery, please direct your student to report to the Administrators’ quad, in front of the Counseling Center, on your assigned day (assignments based on first letter of last name):
- Friday, 8/31: A-E
- Tuesday, 9/4: F-K
- Wednesday, 9/5: L-O
- Thursday, 9/6: P-T
- Friday, 9/7: U-Z
Be sure to bring your own combination lock OR $10 to rent a lock from the JFK locker committee.

Back-to-School Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Like years past, families of ninth grade students are invited to join counselors and administrators for a special presentation at 6 p.m. in the auditorium. Important information regarding high school and university readiness will be presented. See you there!
The School Site Council (SSC) is a group of teachers, staff, parents, and students who work with the school’s administration to develop and evaluate school programs and specific budgets. Site Council guides creation of the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) and typically requires a time commitment of approximately two to three after-school hours per month. There is a parent seat available on the Site Council. If you would be interested in serving, please contact me.
Every California public school, grades kindergarten through 12, with 21 or more English learners must form an English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC). Kennedy will hold four ELAC meetings during the 2018-19 school year, and I encourage parents who are interested in to attend.

The PSAT is fast approaching! All ninth and tenth graders will participate in the PSAT on October 10 during periods one through four. Students will receive practice materials on September 24 from their English teacher. Please follow the embedded links for more information about the PSAT.
